C sounds right for the A coaches. Ulfie I have no problem with for the most part, Arniel sucks though. God when was the last time we had a good PP Coach?

Pp has suxked for years! Players gotta be held responsible. Arniel puts it in motion but he's not on the ice. Find it hard to believe that new pp system will transform it into juggernaut. Same personell will equal same results. Pk hurt with loss of hags and down grade of Moore's play and dmen sucking.

Alain Vigneault said that it was disappointing to see Dan Boyle’s incident with Larry Brooks and that he hopes people will remember Boyle for his career before they remember that interaction. (La Presse) He said that Boyle had a very successful career and won a Stanley Cup but some people will only remember him for this, which he said would be a shame. (La Presse)

AV still having a weird relationship with Boyler...

Reminds me of how people remember Malik for his shootout goal rather than for his traffic cone style of defense.

I guess no one cares about the assistant coaches, or everyone's enjoying a Sunday afternoon in the park...

Hearing Kenny & Joe call the WCF just makes me more sadder the Rangers are out of it.

Arneil needs to go. He's in charge of the pp and pk. Both were horrendous. I get that he's not the person out there playing but make it clear, shoot the puck on the pp. If players don't shoot it's up to you as the coach to put guys out there that will. He gets a F. The defense was equally poor but that might have to do with the system, they looked terrible in there own end and not just the D. Fowards didn't know who they were covering and it let to wide open tap-ins way to often. Give Ulfie 1 more year but on a short leash. C for Ulfie.

I think it's fair to say that if NYR is sputtering by all star break than whole coaching staff will be gone. Gotta give them some slack after a few good year. Short leash

From Carp's blog:
AV: “Yeah, I know the pk stunk and pp stunk except for that
brief period we tried something different but went back to
the plays that stunk. And yes, our defensive scheme stunk
so bad that most of the team didn’t want to bother to play
and our franchise goalie had a nervous breakdown several
times because of it…but, i think we should have another kick
at the can.”

I find this very difficult to believe that no coaching changes are in order. If the D can regain it's old self, then I am okay with Ulfie. Arniel would already be gone if the PP didn't wake up near the end of the regular season; though it still sucks.

It's quite an interesting phenomenon that in Football, assistant coaches are discussed ad nauseum and get too much credit and blame for their position group, but in hockey, you just don't see that level of focus on the assistants and it's usually just the coach/GM that get the attention. That's my observation (and experience) anyway.

First, thanks to Jan for doing these. Passing the time in the off season is certainly a chore.

Second, I think everybody associated with the Rangers gets a C or lower. Regardless of who's responsible for what, the team just never looked liked it was functioning as a cohesive unit. Whether they need to do a better job of getting players to play in the system or getting different players who are suited to the system, they've got to figure out a working model for next year. Since everybody's coming back, let's hope they circle the wagons and get it going again.

Third, does anyone know if the team is playing the same defensive system they were when Ulfie first came in? I'm wondering if he implemented a new system right away in 2013 or if there has been a gradual shift to what he wants. Just curious.

This was the first season in a while I could remember them playing a man to man defense zone structure. Unless I just never noticed it before cause of how bad it was this year.

Suppose they make 0 changes (very unlikely) on D the fact that Boyle is out and Skjei is in every game with 20-25 minutes a game you have to figure, that alone is a gigantic upgrade for that group. And couple that with hopefully a healthy and improved Girardi if he's here, it'll make a huge difference. I still think the biggest problom with this team is the forwards as a whole. They legitimately all stuggled defensively and didn't give the D Corp much help imo

He'll be fine next season and on. His injuries this year have crippled his speed and he's just not ready for playoff hockey. Liability right now but a full offseason of training and conditioning will get him right for next year and beyond.

2 good points. If Skjei can slide in seamlessly, that trade off with Boyle should be a huge win for the defense. I don't know what to do about the forwards. It would appear to me that if you can start with a 4th line of Stalberg/Lindberg/Fast and reconstruct each line forward, that having 4 lines with speed, effort, etc. should be a boon to the defense. Having those guys play on the Top 9 (outside of injury/emergency) just weakens what could be an excellent 4th line. Hopefully, Lindberg will make a full recovery.

Relatedly, I've got to believe that Gorton moves Hayes contract for a similar cost, but different style of player. We'll see.

Have to be a center with a similar skill set he showed last year. I don't see it happening for the same price. Lindberg should center the 4th, take over Moore's spot. You move Hayes, you need a 3rd line center.
